The Lady Knox Geyser at the Waiotapu Scenic Reserve in Rotorua on the North Island of New Zealand is one of the many fascinating sights to see at this thermal wonderland. Each day at 10:15 a.m., the Lady Knox Geyser is promoted to erupt, with some eruptions lasting up to an hour in length.
The geyser was discovered back in 1901 by some New Zealand prisoners who were required to make a clearing for new trees. Hot bubbling water was discovered and the prisoners used this water to wash their clothes in. When soap was added, an eruption began, eventually shooting their laundry upwards.
To create larger eruptions, rocks were set around the base of the spring eventually making the silica build up producing its white cone shape it displays today.
