Dark rain clouds move in over the Wai-o-tapu Scenic Reserve in Rotorua, New Zealand as the eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser has been forced to explode by humans. This eruption can send hot water into the air for 20 meters, sometimes lasting for a good hour before settling down again.
Discovered back in 1901 by a group of prisoners, they would add a small amount of soap to the bubbling water so they could wash their clothes. When the soap was added, the clothes were sent soaring into the air.
With the addition of rocks around the base of the bubbling water, the eruption became better and silica soon built up creating the unique cone shape it displays today. The Wai-o-tapu Scenic Reserve is a very intriguing place to visit on your vacation to the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand.
