The sunlight filters through the branches of the Kauri Trees in the Waipoua Forest in Northland, NZ, these particular ones known as the Four Sisters. A visitor to the Waipoua Forest stands in front of these massive trees which is reachable by walking the Bush Walk which begins at the carpark.
Kauri trees can sometimes grow in an unusual form in which the bases of the trees join together like that of the Four Sisters. Sometimes there are two, three, four, five or six trees together where their trunks are evenly spaced and rise from a large mound of pukahukahu.
When fully grown, a Kauri tree can be about 60 meters tall with a trunk measuring about 5 meters in diameter. The Kauri trees have a slow growth rate making it possible for them to easily reach 2,000 years of age.
Information signs displayed throughout the Waipoua Forest in Northland, NZ explain the history of the more prominent trees like the Four Sisters.
