In the Waipoua Forest in Northland on the North Island of New Zealand, the largest Kauri trees found throughout New Zealand grow here. The Tane Mahuta also known as the God or Lord of the Forest, is the largest known living Kauri tree and tourists can walk the forest path from the car park to see this magnificent tree which towers above this tourist.
The Tane Mahuta was believed to be discovered in the 1920's by a surveying crew and again identified in the 1928's by the crew building the road. The Kauri Tree has a trunk height of 17.68 meters, a girth of 13.77 meters and reaches a height of 51.2 meters which dwarves out the rest of the Kauri trees.
