A unique looking animal is the Kaka bird who sits peacefully upon his roost at the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre in Wairarapa, New Zealand while we take his picture. A Kaka is a species of parrot which is native to the forests of New Zealand growing to a height of about 18" and a weight of about 550 grams.
A strong, curved beak is very prominent on the face of the Kaka bird which they use to shred coverings off their food. The plumage on the Kaka is a blend of red and brown hues with a spot of yellow situated below each eye.
The number of Kaka birds is very low which makes them a species listed as endangered. At the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, they are bred, released into their natural habitat and watched closely to ensure the numbers of this native bird continues to increase.
