Hokianga Harbour Rugged Coastline Northland New Zealand
Photo & Vacation Spot

From the South Head Outlook, the rugged coastline of Hokianga Harbour in Northland, New Zealand shows of the strong currents near the entrance.

The South Head Outlook at Hokianga Harbour in Northland, New Zealand displays a rugged coastline where the water churns, sometimes creating hazards for water vessels. Crashing over and around the rocks, the water makes its way onto the beach which is surrounded by lush vegetation.

Hokianga Harbour is located in the Northland region and the river mouth extends for 30 kilometers inland from the Tasman Sea. The south end of Hokianga is made up of the communities of Waipoua, Waimamaku, Omapere, Opononi, Pakanae, Koutu, Whirinaki, Rawene, Waima, Taheke and Moehau. The coastline is not rugged along the entire south end of the Hokianga Harbour, only in certain areas which are fully exposed to the open waters of the Tasman Sea.

The historic Hokianga Harbour is also known as "Te Kohanaga o Te Tai Tokerau" in Maori language, a place known as home for the northern Maori tribes. The discovery and settlement of this harbour make it the birthplace of the Maori people.

Many species of marine mammals visit the Hokianga Harbour and people find the rugged coastline great for surfing and sandboarding. The downfall around this part of the coastline is the strong tidal currents which the Tasman Sea displays. The beauty of the area and the mountainous sand dunes is best viewed from the South Head Outlook.
