Cars parked along either side of the main street in the historic town of Arrowtown in Central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand belong to local residents and tourists. The main street in Arrowtown has a wide range of shops some which include galleries, clothing, gifts, jewellery, cafes, restaurants, accommodations, beauty salons and different trades and services.
Located along the Arrow River, Arrowtown has a history of being a gold mining town where miners would arrive in droves and camp out along the river banks. At the peak of the gold rush, the town was home to about 7,000 miners, soon becoming the centre of other communities, eventually leading up to what it is today. Approximately 2,400 people still call Arrowtown home and share their beautiful town with the thousands of visitors every year.
Activities around the historic town include hiking, walking, golf, gold panning, swimming, lawn bowling and sightseeing in and around the historic buildings. Summer is one of the best times of year to visit Arrowtown, in Central Otago, New Zealand as there is a wide range of events including festivals, carnivals and races, with the venue being centered on or close by the main street.
