The historic wooden lighthouse at Akaroa Harbour stands on a cliff in Banks Peninsula in Canterbury, New Zealand with a backdrop of hills adorned in lush greenery. The original lighthouse was located on the eastern end of Akaroa Harbour for one hundred years until it was moved on October 4th, 1980 to its current location as it was heading for destruction.
The lighthouse had to be broken down into three pieces to be transported to its new location and it is still very similar to its original form. Before the lighthouse was moved, it could be seen for 23 miles by water vessels, but now the light atop the Akaroa Harbour Lighthouse is only illuminated on special occasions.
Historic Akaroa Harbour lighthouse. Moved from outside the harbour to its current position near the town of Akaroa to avoid being demolished. Akaroa Harbour, Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, East Coast, South Island, New Zealand.
