In the summer, a hippopotamus will spend many hours during the day in the water in its habitat at the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand as they can easily burn their bodies from the heat of the sun. As the temperatures cool off at night, the hippopotamus will emerge from the water and wander around the fields in his habitat where he grazes in the field.
When in the water, a hippopotamus uses its back legs to kick for a short distance or walk along the bottom and use its legs to push off if the water becomes too deep. Floating is not a trait which is performed successfully by a hippopotamus.
While visiting the hippopotamus habitat at the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand, scour the water for the mother and son who reside in the Hippo River exhibit.
