Hippopotamus Behaviour Auckland Zoo
Photo & Vacation Spot

Typical behaviour by a Hippopotamus when it's feeling threatened is to open its mouth wide.

A hippo yawn - generally an open mouth signals that a hippopotamus is threatened. This large adult hippo however, has a protected and fenced area at the Auckland Zoo and only has to share the pond with a duck or two.

Hippopotamus, Hippopotamus amphibius, at the Auckland Zoo, Auckland, North Island, New Zealand.
