The Tane Mahuta in the Waipoua Forest in Northland, New Zealand is the largest living Kauri Tree and many refer to it as the God of the Forest. Most of the famous Kauri Trees are within a short walking distance from the car park with the Tane Mahuta being close to the road. Hours can be spent in this amazing forest exploring the flora, fauna, Kauri trees and viewing the picturesque scenery from the lookout area.
Trails meander through the Waipoua Forest where various Kauri Trees are found, but none are as majestic as the Tane Mahuta. This tree was first found in the 1920's and continues to thrive in this forest where it has grown to be about 51.2 meters high with a trunk height of 17.68 feet measured to the first branch. It is believed to be around 1,200 years with the greatest height in the forest, making the rest of the Kauri Trees appear miniature against this God of the Forest.
