A long flight of 700 steps leads visitors to the East Cape Lighthouse on the North Island of New Zealand where the scenery is breathtaking. Lush greenery blankets the landscape until reaching the peaks of the rugged cliffs which quickly drop off meeting the ocean below.
Traveling along the 22 kilometer road from Te Araroa, New Zealand which hugs the coastline, one can enjoy the coastal scenery or stop at one of the various beaches along the way. At the most easterly point of the North Island, one will find the East Cape Lighthouse which has stood in its current location since December of 1922.
By 1985, the lighthouse was fully automated and is now controlled from the Maritime New Zealand headquarters in Wellington, New Zealand. Visitors can not tour through the East Cape Lighthouse, but the scenery is stunning and well worth the hike up the stairs.
