The clouds roll in over the Pacific Ocean off the North Island of New Zealand leaving small openings for the sunset lighting to break through. Along the coastal shores at East Cape, the East Cape Lighthouse stands high on the cliffs where it has watched over these waters since December, 1922.
The lighthouse was originally built on East Island but was moved to the mainland in 1920 to ensure its safety from earthquakes and landslips. By April of 1922, the light atop the lighthouse ceased to burn and the decision was made to move it to its current location.
The East Cape Lighthouse became automated in 1985 and stands 154 meters above the ocean. Visitors can take the walking track consisting of 700 steps to wander the grounds at the East Cape Lighthouse and enjoy the beautiful scenery offered around the North Island of New Zealand.
