Between the towns of Wanaka and Queenstown in Central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand, the scenery from the Crown Range Road is breathtaking. The arid landscape spans for miles over the mountainous region as the sunlight glistens off the peaks and the waterway in the backdrop.
Twisting and turning amongst the landscape, the Crown Range Road rises to an elevation of 3,530 feet and is considered the highest paved road in New Zealand. The road travels between Arrowtown and Wanaka to the north, a heavily populated area during the goldrush in the 1860's. In some areas along the Crown Range Road, visitors will find remains of the gold prospecting days and learn of the gold mining history.
The scenery is amazing and one will find themselves stopping at various viewpoints along the Crown Range Road to enjoy the beauty of Central Otago, New Zealand.
