Atop the Port Hills along Summit Road in Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand, the view of the city of Christchurch is stunning. Soft, billowy clouds hang over the city which extends for miles across the landscape, it being the largest city on the South Island. The Avon River flows through the middle of the city of Christchurch and the urban area sits along Banks Peninsula with the east being bordered by the Pacific Ocean.
The population of Christchurch is around 400,000 with a mixture of different ethnic groups, European being the majority of people. The city was officially established in 1856 when it started out with a very small group of people living in a close knit community.
The narrow Summit Road winds around the top of Port Hills which can make driving a little tricky. Cyclists and walkers also make use of this road, so keep your eyes open for them while driving and be sure to pull over and stop to enjoy the view.
