Photo & Vacation Spot

A fascinating display of thermal energy where the steam rises off the crater pool at the Champagne Pool at the Wai-o-tapu Scenic Reserve in Rotorua, New Zealand.

Burning hot steam rises above the Champagne Pool at the Artist's Palette in the Wai-o-tapu Scenic Reserve in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand. Mineral deposits create the vibrant orange hues, the intriguing edges around the pool and the unique formations of the Champagne Pool.

At least 900 years ago, this hydrothermal crater exploded due to a massive rush of thermal energy leaving behind a 2,000 square meter pool of bubbles, hot water and steam.

Visitors to the Wai-o-tapu Scenic Reserve can follow paths and boardwalks making access easy to explore the Champagne Pool, the Artist's Palette, the mud pools and various waterfalls.
