Behind the large cliffs which span the Wairarapa coastline on the North Island of New Zealand, the remaining rays from the sun shine over the peaks highlighting Castlepoint Lighthouse. Near sundown, the lagoon, the bay and the lighthouse take on a new appearance as the lighting glistens across the landscape and fills the sky with soft, pastel hues.
The lighthouse was first built in 1913 and the lantern was fueled by oil as it guided water vessels from 52 meters above sea level atop the cliffs. In 1954, the lamp was replaced to electric and was run on a generator and in 1988, the lighthouse became automated. The tower stands 23 meters high and the automated lantern can been see for 26 nautical miles.
