A walking path leads tourists to the Cape Reinga Lighthouse in Northland where the scenery of the coastal shores at the northern most point in New Zealand come to life. The Cape Reinga Lighthouse watches over the treacherous waters off Cape Reinga where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean unite. Beside the lighthouse, stands a yellow directional sign displaying various destinations around the world and the distance to each place.
Since 1941, the Cape Reinga Lighthouse, made of concrete, has guided mariners around these waters but due to war restrictions, it was not until 1945 it was used regularly. In 1987, the lighthouse become automated leaving the lighthouse keepers out of a job which they came to love and rely on. Flashing every 12 seconds, the Cape Reinga Lighthouse shines for approximately 19 nautical miles across these waters giving mariners plenty of warning of what lies ahead.
In Northland, the Cape Reinga Lighthouse and the amazing scenery has become one of the most popular tourist attractions on the North Island of New Zealand.
