Cape Palliser Lighthouse Rugged Coastline Wairarapa New Zealand
Photo & Vacation Spot

The red and white structure, home to the Cape Palliser Lighthouse in Wairarapa, New Zealand, watches over the rugged coastline from atop the cliff.

Along the Cape Palliser coastline in Wairarapa on the North Island of New Zealand, rugged rock formations encompass the area, some which are blanketed with greenery while others are swept clean by the daily ocean movement. Atop the cliff, at 78 meters above sea level, stands the red and white Cape Palliser Lighthouse.

First established in 1897, the lighthouse has watched over the Cook Strait, an area where strong currents occur causing hazardous conditions and where gale force winds sweep through the area. For 89 years, the lighthouse was manned and then it was switched over to an automated system.
