While looking out over the glacier blue water of Lake Pukaki in Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand, the scenery is stunning as the snow covered peaks of Mt. Cook and the Southern Alps decorate the backdrop. Mt. Cook reaches a height of 3,764 meters, the highest mountain in New Zealand, as the rugged ridges which make up the Southern Alps span themselves across the horizon from below the peak. The Southern Alps were created about 25-30 million years ago and today, they are protected by various New Zealand national parks.
Lake Pukaki is the largest of three lakes in the Mackenzie Basin which is bordered by native trees and bush. There are many different viewpoints around Lake Pukaki where visitors can enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
