Boat tours around the Bay of Islands off Northland, New Zealand are plentiful but there are limited vessels which are approved to allow passengers to swim with the Bottlenose Dolphins. On this tour, a large net has been lowered into the water to aid people into the water where the dolphins frolic about as others stay aboard and watch from the bow of the boat.
The Bottlenose Dolphins appear to enjoy the human encounters as much as the passengers are thrilled swimming with them. Weather and water conditions must cooperate while on these boat tours for people to safely enter the water with the dolphins.
Dolphins are one of the most aerobatic and friendly mammals in these waters and are very accustomed to sharing their space with humans. Other species of marine mammals which reside in the Bay of Islands and are often seen by passengers aboard these boat tours are Killer Whales, seals and penguins.
