Bright red stamens with yellow tips, appearing as twinkling lights, burst through the tiny white and red buds during the months of November to January when the Pohutukawa Tree starts blossoming. The coastal shores at Omata Beach in Taranaki are beautiful during the summer when the Pohutukawa Tree and other species of flowers native to New Zealand are blossoming.
Many refer to the Pohutukawa Tree as the "New Zealand Christmas Tree" due to its sparkling appearance with some of the trees growing to 20 meters high. The trees seem to stagger their timing when blossoming and they differ in the brightness of the flowers.
Visitors to the coastal shores of Taranaki, will capture a picture or two of the Pohutukawa Tree when blossoming as they are not seen growing naturally in many other regions of the world.
