When the tide recedes, the sandy beach at Black Reef is exposed where visitors can enjoy the scenery of Cape Kidnappers and the coastal region off Hawkes Bay on the North Island of NZ. The steep cliffs rise above the water's edge where the Cape Kidnappers Australasian Gannet colony resides when they are nesting and breeding.
The beach at Black Reef is fascinating to explore at low tide as holes in the large boulders become hideaways for many sea creatures who await the return of the water. The coastal scenery spans for miles across the horizon as white clouds move in and scatter themselves over the blue sky.
Standing on the beach at Black Reef, you can watch the Australasian Gannets soar above, often diving straight into the water for their meals.
