A bright, yellow halo encircles the sun which is dipping down across the horizon at sunset leaving behind its radiant glow across the rocky beach at Gillespies Beach in Westland on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. On the beach, visitors have collected flat, rounded rocks to build an Inukshuk which the sunset lighting illuminates.
During the summer months, Gillespies Beach becomes home to a small number of seals but when winter arrives, approximately 1500 seals congregate below Waikowhai Bluff at Gillespies Beach. At low tide, the rocks are bared allowing plenty of area to roam along the coastal shores and watch the fury of the Tasman Sea as waves crash onto the beach.
The landscape around Gillespies Beach is surrounded by glaciers and rainforests which was made by the glacial movement over 14,0000 years ago. A beautiful and tranquil place to watch a sunset while visiting Westland on the West Coast of New Zealand.
