A horseshoe shaped falls, similar to Niagara Falls, only much smaller in scale, is the Haruru Falls which is a beautiful two hour hike from the town of Paihia in the Bay of Islands in Northland, New Zealand. The trail makes its way alongside the fast moving river through a forest full of various types of trees until it ends at the spectacular sight of the loud, cascading falls.
The Maori people have left behind many beliefs at Haruru Falls, one being that a taniwha (water monster) lives in the pool at the base of the falls. During the Spring, the water rushes over the ledges blanketing the entire rock ledge, but during the Summer or Fall, visitors can stand on top of the rocks and admire Haruru Falls from above.
