The small coastal town of Russell in the Bay of Islands on the North Island of New Zealand was once known as Kororareka when the first European settlers made residency here. In January of 1844, the Governor designated Kororareka as part of the township of Russell and today, the name Russell only applies.
The population of the town of Russell is a little over 1,100 as much of the waterfront properties are holiday homes or accommodations for tourists visiting the Bay of Islands. A car ferry transports passengers back and forth across the Bay of Islands to the town of Russell where they can disembark and explore this picturesque town.
Antique, gift and souvenir shops are just a few which line the main street along with hotels, cafes and restaurants. This quaint town is the ideal vacation spot out of the main regions of New Zealand where romance, exploring, history and relaxation are first on the agenda.
