Visitors to the Pridelands region at the Auckland Zoo on the North Island of New Zealand, are treated to a close encounter with the giraffe. As the giraffe heads toward the edge of its habitat, visitors can view this African animal and its unique markings up the neck and on its head.
Each individual spot on the giraffe has its own shape, size and design making it easy to tell the difference between each giraffe residing at the Auckland Zoo. Down the nape of its neck, there is a long mane of light brown hair and atop its head, sits two prominent horns. In front of the horns, a mass of bumps are seen which are calcium deposits and only appear on the male gender.
Being the tallest mammal in the world with some of them reaching up to 6 meters in height, they stride about their habitat at the Auckland Zoo with their heads held high. Being this tall is an important feature for their diet as much of their food comes from the tops of the trees.
The Auckland Zoo has many species of African animals in the Pridelands region but the most graceful one to see and capture a picture of, is the giraffe.
