Many find reptiles do be repulsive, but this ancient reptile known as a Tuatara is a must see while visiting the Auckland Zoo on the North Island of New Zealand. The Tuatara has been placed on the endangered species of reptile list as their numbers have rapidly decreased and their breeding rate is one which is very slow.
In the wild, the Tuatara resides amongst the forested areas in damp dark places to hide from the heat and survives by feeding on birds and insects. The Tuatara will reach about 32 inches in length including their tail and have a spiny crest running along their backs. Sharp claws make it easier for the Tuatara to climb through and over the rough terrain in their habitat.
The Auckland Zoo on the North Island of New Zealand has a few types of these reptiles and have been breeding them to try and increase their existence in the wild. Once they are successfully born, some are placed back in their natural habitats so that these ancient reptiles do not become extinct.
