As the sky above Wellington, New Zealand begins to darken at dusk, the Albatross sculpture located along the waterfront shows of its beauty as the lights begin to brighten. The illumination of the fountain starts out fairly dull at the onset of dusk, but the later it becomes, the yellow lights reflect off the sculpture, one that has adorned the waterfront since 1986.
The creator of the Albatross, Tanya Ashken, bases a majority of her work around the sea world and various species of birds. At the age of 7, Tanya was creating things from wood and by 13, silver was her main interest used in her artwork. Now sculpting with silver, bronze, marble, hardwood, aluminum and many other types of material, the Albatross has been one of her most important pieces.
