The green hillsides rise above a commercial salmon farm located in Akaroa Harbour in Canterbury on the South Island of NZ.

Commercial salmon farms are a huge controversy throughout the world and this particular one is located in the Akaroa Harbour in Canterbury on the South Island of NZ. Chinook Salmon/King Salmon are farmed on a significant scale in NZ which became a steady growing industry when the first commercial salmon farm around New Zealand was put in place in 1976 in Golden Bay, NZ.

Other salmon farms were created with the first sea-cage salmon farm being established in 1983 in Stewart Island, following by others in Marlborough Sounds. In 2004, the commercial salmon farms brought in approximately $73 million dollars leading to more individual farms continuously being erected.

This one in Akaroa Harbour below the hillsides, is one of 14 ongrowing sites and 12 hatcheries/freshwater sites located around NZ, a majority of them being around the South Island.
