Clear blue skies, barren landscape and an active stratovolcano makes up the scenery from atop the Whakapapa skifield on Mt. Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park, NZ. This volcano is known as Mt. Ngauruhoe which first erupted 2,500 years ago making it the youngest of the three volcanoes in Tongariro National Park.
Throughout the 20th century, Mt. Ngauruhoe has erupted 45 times with the most recent eruption in 1977. The alert level on the active stratovolcano rose to a 1 in June of 2006 as more low frequency earthquakes were being recorded around Mt. Ngauruhoe.
Standing at 2,287 meters, hiking and backpacking up Mt. Ngauruhoe have become a popular summer activity for many and as winter takes over the landscape, many flock to its neighboring volcano, Mt. Ruapehu for skiing.
