Exclusive to New Zealand, the Variable Oyster Catcher resides along the coastal shores where they feast on various types of food, some which include crabs, worms, snails and mollusks. To help them get at some of their food, the Oyster Catcher uses its long beak to poke the shells allowing them to make holes.
A dark black plumage contrasts the orange hues of the beak and eyes on the bird as they wade along the coastline on the North Island of New Zealand. Female Oyster Catchers grow to be slightly large than the males, but both sexes have the same coloring.
