New Zealand Weka Bird Marlborough Sounds

A Weka is a type of bird which is endemic to the New Zealand area and this particular one was seen in the Marlborough Sounds on the South Island.

The Weka is one of many flightless bird species only this particular bird is endemic to New Zealand where there are four subspecies which have been recognized. Growing to be around the size of a chicken, the male Weka reaches about 1 kilogram in weight with the female being slightly smaller.

A brown shaded plumage mixed with black and grey, the Weka bird can be found in areas such as forests, grasslands, sand dunes and rocky shores. In the grassland of the Marlborough Sounds on the South Island of New Zealand, this Weka will search for food, some animal varieties like earthworms, larvae, beetles, ants, slugs, spiders, rats and mice, but its main source of nourishment comes from plants.
