As sunset settles in around Muriwai Beach near Auckland on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand, members of the Australasian Gannet Colony soar above the cliffs while others rest atop the large rock. Hundreds of Australasian Gannets spend their days atop this rock at Muriwai Beach during breeding season where they await their new family members and then tend to their chicks until they are ready to soar above the Tasman Sea and dive for their own meals before the colony moves on. The gannet colony will return to Muriwai Beach on a yearly basis making the total number of gannets each year around 2,400.
Each sunset over these coastal shores differs, with some days bringing in more clouds as the lighting filters through to highlight the rugged coastal shores where the gannet colony resides.
