The shallow waters in the small cove of Maitai Bay on the Karikari Peninsula in Northland, New Zealand display their turquoise hues as the Pohutukawa trees blossom in bright red hues along the shore. Pohutukawa trees belong to the coastal evergreen family and from November to January in Maitai Bay, the small red cluster flower heads flourish in the summer sun.
The tree reaches about 20 meters in height while spreading across the landscape in a dome shape. As the flowers blossom, the stamens appear as small twinkling lights and many people refer to the Pohutukawa tree as the New Zealand Christmas Tree. A hardy type of tree which are considered to be fairly easy to grow.
Maitai Bay offers visitors to the North Island serenity, pristine beaches and the stunning scenery encompassing these coastal shores.
