A soft blanket of clouds spans across the sky over Lyttelton Harbour and Quail Island in Canterbury on the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. From the Summit Road on the Port Hills, the scenery is spectacular where the harbour extends 18 kilometers inland from the southern end of Pegasus Bay.
The harbour of Lyttelton was created by a volcanic crater which gave away, leaving the area encompassed by two islands, one called Quail Island and the other Ripapa Island. Steep hills rising to 500 meters in height surround the area, creating scenery which is hard to beat while visiting Canterbury. Quail Island sits in the upper harbour southwest of the town of Lyttelton and in early years, Quail Island was home to a leper colony and an animal quarantine station.
The Port Hills run in an east-west direction from Lyttelton and Christchurch, New Zealand and the Summit Road travels along the top of these hills. A popular area used for mountain biking, walking, jogging and a tranquil place where one can enjoy the scenery.
