This species of Little Shag is one which only breeds in New Zealand, one of three subspecies. They nest in large colonies near the water and feed in fresh water as well as salt water. The picture of this Little Shag was captured at an estuary near Hinahina along the Southern Scenic Route in Otago on the South Island of New Zealand.
A bright yellow bill decorates the face of the Little Shag, with a long neck which is white on the underside while the rest of his plumage is black. This Little Shag sits at the end of a tree stump, overlooking the water where he will dive for local flounder and small flatfish.
