The road sign located along the Forks-Okariko Road in the Okariko Forest in Westland on the South Island of New Zealand marks the hazard zones for the kiwi birds. The kiwi birds are flightless species of animals and people traveling the road should always be leery of these tiny little birds crossing the roads, especially as evening nears.
Visitors to the South Island of New Zealand may find these signs a little odd at first but once they realize how important the Kiwi bird is to the region, each sign becomes clear. These birds grow to be about the size of a chicken weighing between 3 and 9 pounds, making them very hard to see when they scurry across the roads.
The most important thing for travelers to do while visiting the Okariko Forest in Westland on the South Island of New Zealand, is to pay close attention to all the bright yellow and black road signs.
