The larger luxury tour vessels which take passengers to White Island in the Bay of Plenty off the North Island of New Zealand, also require the use of a small inflatable boat. As the main tour boat remains anchored in the deeper areas of Crater Bay near the volcanic shores of White Island, an inflatable boat transfers passengers between the two.
Behind the large volcanic rocks of White Island, steam rises off Crater Lake, often reaching a distance of 3 kilometers into the air. As a safety precaution, all passengers must wear a hard hat before setting foot on White Island and often a mask is needed when standing near the large crater due to the rising gases and steam emerging from the Earth's crust.
