In the Pridelands area of the Auckland Zoo on the North Island of New Zealand, visitors can view the Rhinoceros who is one of the permanent residents. Grazing on grasses, the Rhinoceros uses its wide front lip to crop the grass often moving its head from side to side while eating.
These herbivore grazing animals prefer short grains and drink water twice a day if possible, but can survive without any water for 4 - 5 days. Half of the Rhinoceros's day at the Auckland Zoo is spent grazing, a few hours of resting time and the rest of the day spent mosey about.
The Rhinoceros prefers an open woodland with grasslands nearby, thick brush, water, a flat landscape and occasionally they like to muck about in swampy areas. Rhinoceroses weigh between 1,400 to 3,600 kilograms with the males being slightly larger than females but both species have a gray to dark yellow coloring, two horns, a long shaped head, long ears and a wide, but very flexible front lip.
To fully enjoy your trip to the Auckland Zoo, one should plan on a full day to be able to explore all the habitats and come face to face with some of the animals.
