The coastline around the Goat Island Marine Reserve in Leigh, Northland on the North Island of New Zealand is picturesque as the summer sun glistens off the surface of the water. Small waves break along the shallow areas as the trees flourishing in beautiful green hues, decorate the hillsides.
Founded in 1975, these shallow waters create the opportunity for visitors to the Goat Island Marine Reserve to watch the undersea world come to life. The shallow waters along the coastline provide exceptional viewing for divers, snorkelers, swimmers and the glass bottom boat tours.
Visibility in the water can appear murky at times and it has been reported that the best times to visit the Goat Island Marine Reserve is on a sunny day with little or no wind. It takes about a week for the water to clear after a good storm so timing is the key when wanting the full effect of the life under the water.
