The crevasses and cracks on Fox Glacier in Westland National Park on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand are spectacular to see while walking across this glacier landscape. To reach these crevasses, many board a helicopter tour which drops passengers off at the summit where they can hike across the glacier.

Three types of crevasses exist on the Fox Glacier, the one seen most often is the transverse crevasse, the second being marginal crevasses and the last type called longitudinal crevasses. Crevasses appear across the Fox Glacier in Westland National Park when the glacier changes speed while retreating.

For hikers, these crevasses can be extremely dangerous if one is not watching where they are walking as some are very deep leaving the way out non existent. The more experienced ice climbers will take all the necessary equipment and head up Fox Glacier on their own and once reaching the summit, the scenery of Westland National Park is breathtaking.
