A group of Dusky Dolphins appear across the surface of the water heading towards the vessel carrying passengers on a dolphin watching excursion with Encounter Kaikoura off the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Energetic animals, the Dusky Dolphins love to play and frolic around the boat with surfing the wake being a favorite activity.
Very similar in coloring to the Pacific White Sided Dolphins, the Dusky Dolphins have a dark grey backside with a white underside. The dorsal fin is two shades of grey and two white streaks starting at their dorsal fin run towards their tail.
A very sociable animal which seems to travel in pods consisting of between 5 and 15 Dusky Dolphins. Often as many as 1,000 animals can be seen together, but the average sighting off the Kaikoura coast in New Zealand is somewhere between 100 and 180.
The Dusky Dolphins are a fairly common sight along the East Coast of New Zealand and one of the best tours to accompany passengers out to see them, is Encounter Kaikoura.
