Ready for anything, this cute Spider Monkey stares back at visitors to the Auckland Zoo on the North Island of New Zealand as they watch him swing about his habitat. Hanging in an upside position, the Spider Monkey is a natural at climbing and swinging from trees using his tail as an extra hand and his long, spindly limbs for gripping and feeding. The hands on the Spider Monkey are long and narrow with hooklike features with only fingers which are elongated as they have no thumb.
At the Auckland Zoo, the breeding of the Spider Monkey has been extremely successful which is mandatory as their numbers in the wild are near extinction. The best time to view these cute monkeys at the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand is earlier in the day as this is when the Spider Monkey tends to feed. They swing about their habitat during these hours leaving the remainder of the day for resting in the trees.
The Auckland Zoo is home to approximately 13 Spider Monkeys who are kept in a rainforest enclosure. Close encounters with these cute animals happens at 12:30 on Thursdays and Saturdays.
