A beautiful colorful bird, the Rainbow Lorikeet, received its name due to its markings and was introduced into Auckland, New Zealand as well as Hong Kong and Western Australia. A pair of these birds can have nine chicks at one time, meaning the population of Rainbow Lorikeets will increase dramatically.
They are not a particularly large type of bird, growing from about 9.8 to 11.8 inches in size. Their main source of diet is pollen and nectar and many orchard owners find the Rainbow Lorikeet to be a pest as they strip their trees of fresh fruit.
Many of these birds can be seen flying free around Auckland, New Zealand, but this picture was taken at the Auckland Zoo.
