New Zealand is made up of three main islands and several smaller islands some of which are sub-antarctic. The total land area is Aotearoa (New Zealand) is over 268,000 sq km. It's coastline at 15,000 kms is surprisingly extensive given the land area.
The extensive coastal regions of New Zealand range from the sub-tropical in the north to the sub-Antarctic in the south, and for this reason the country features some of the most diverse coastal scenery.
Sandy recreational beaches are more frequently seen on the east coast of New Zealand on both islands, whereas the West Coast tends to be more rocky and rugged - a little less suitable for swimming. The West Coast does however draw surfers particularly to the coastal waters in the Raglan area of the Waikato, North Island.
