Because of the shape of the head and body, the sperm whale is the model for the famous fictitious story of Moby Dick by Herman Melville.
Sperm Whales are the largest species of toothed whales and are difficult to view at water level and from an aerial perspective. They can dive for a long time, being able to dive to depths of 2,200 metres and hold their breath for as long as 2 hours. Therefore it is possible to embark on a whale watching tour and not see a sperm whale - although is not common.
